Cal Poly Pomona

Cal Poly Pomona (1938) is internationally recognized for its many outstanding academic programs, including nationally-ranked hospitality management, architecture and engineering programs. One of only six polytechnic universities in the United States, Cal Poly Pomona champions a learning-centered approach that places learning at the center of every program, course and activity on campus. The university’s 2,600 faculty and staff serve close to 20,000 students who earn degrees in bachelor’s, master’s and certificate programs.

The 2003-04 academic year was the year of much recognition and accomplishment. Cal Poly Pomona was ranked 3rd Best in the West by the independent Carnegie Communication survey. It also placed fifth in the influential U.S. News & World Report survey among Top Public Universities-Master’s in the western U.S. As the largest college at Cal Poly Pomona, the CBA contributes significantly to this recognition.

This year promises innovation and exciting opportunities in the field of Computer Information Systems.

The Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency have honored Cal Poly Pomona’s Computer Information Systems (CIS) department with the designation National Center of Excellence in Information Assurance Education for academic years 2005-2008.

Cal Poly Pomona is the only California State University with that designation, and one of only four institutions in the state, along with Stanford University, University of California Davis and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey.

DOE Title V Collaboration Grant

The five community colleges and state universities in the Cooperative Arrangement are located in the same geographical area of Southern California, typically called the Greater Los Angeles Region. They first came together, as a member of a national, 35-college consortium, called Advanced Networking for Minority Serving Institutions (AN-MSI) that meets to collaborate on how Information Systems (computers, network, staff) can best support the academic programs, institutional management and fiscal stability of minority-serving institutions and their students.

Through analysis of their own institutional strengths and weaknesses they all discovered a common set of problems that are seriously threatening their ability to provide their constituencies, including students, with secure and reliable technology resources. Providing secure and reliable technology resources is of utmost importance to these institutions as they, through their individual Title V grants and other means, are trying to improve student outcomes through effective use of technology, reach undeserved populations through distance education, and use technology-based management information systems for more effective planning, decision-making and institutional management.

Due to limited resources and in-house expertise, the colleges are unable to address the problems related to information and network security and reliability, individually. Only by sharing resources and expertise to increase their own capacity, and by using technology effectively for communication and to cost-effectively deliver the programs that will be developed, can they ultimately overcome these problems and achieve their institutional goals and objectives.

Regional Information Systems Security Center RISSC

Mission Statement - Mount San Antonio College and Cal Poly Pomona have been called upon to bring the latest information in Systems Security to their surrounding community. Through the Regional Information Systems Security Center (RISSC) Project, funded by a NSF-ATE grant, they employ a three-fold approach in accomplishing this mission.

By infusing curriculum at both institutions with security content, new classes, certificates and degrees are available at each facility. Secondly, in an effort to disseminate this security knowledge to local educators; they provide workshops and training for K-12, 2 year and 4 year institutions. And finally, through its many outreach activities and advisory board meetings, RISSC provides additional forums to bring cutting edge security information to the community at large.
